A student at Florida State University, Madison Leigh Gerhard is pursuing a bachelor of science in psychology, expecting to graduate in 2021. After earning her undergraduate degree, Madison Leigh Gerhard plans to enter a physician’s assistant program at the graduate level.
Physician’s assistants (PAs) are medical professionals trained in diagnosing illnesses, developing treatment plans, and prescribing medications. Because they trained across a wide range of practice areas, PAs can provide a spectrum of services to treat the “whole patient.” Entrance into one of the country’s 250 PA programs requires a bachelor’s degree and courses in various prerequisite science classes.
By the time they enter a PA program, most students have accumulated an average of over 3,000 hours of patient care experience through jobs as medical assistants, paramedics, and athletic trainers. Most PA programs include classroom instruction that encompasses basic medical sciences, behavioral ethics, and behavioral sciences, as well as approximately 2,000 hours of clinical rotations through various medical and surgical specialties. Most programs can be completed in three academic years.
